Roadside On the Way to Hana In East Maui
East Maui is on the windward side of the island which means it rains a lot, and tropical jungles and waterfalls abound. The remote villages of East Maui live largely in the old traditions of Hawai’i and the locals prefer to do things at a human pace, in tune with the seasons and natural rhythms of the aina (land.) Many describe a visit to East Maui as visiting ‘old Hawai’i’ - Hawai’i as it was before the internet and cell phones made us readily connect to the rest of the world.
East Maui is made up of four mokus (districts) Ko’olau, Hana, Kipahulu, and Kaupo. Each area is unique in climate and community makeup. Arriving with curiosity and respect for these areas allows for fuller and richer experiences.
Hana is the main town in East Maui. The rich history and cultural heritage of this area is worth exploring. Hana also has some of the best beaches in East Maui and incredible natural wonders to be discovered.
