Big Beach in Makena
South Maui is known for its beaches and year-round sunny, warm weather. This makes it a popular spot for visitors. During the winter months, whale sightings are a common occurrence from shore.
The westernmost town of South Maui is Maʻalaea with its beautiful harbor, waterfront condominium complexes, aquarium, and restaurants, and shopping.
Moving southeast, Maʻalaea is connected by 3 miles of white sand beach to North Kihei, a mostly residential area with lower density condominium complexes along the shore, and many restaurants and shopping areas.
South Kihei is home to four of Maui’s favorite beach parks Kamaole I, II and III, and Keawakapu. Several shopping centers with restaurants and activity centers serve the many vacation rental condominium complexes in this area.
Next is the resort community of Wailea. Found in Wailea are three championship golf courses and 5 beautiful crescent-shaped beaches. Beachfront resorts include the Fairmont Kea Lani, Four Seasons Maui, The Grand Wailea, Wailea Beach Resort, and the Andaz. The community of Wailea includes single-family homes and luxury condominiums.
Finally, the road ends in Makena, the site of Maui’s last lava flow. Oneloa (Big Beach,) one of Maui’s longest beaches, is located in Makena, as is Makena Landing, the launch site for many ocean activities. Because of the remoteness and challenging terrain, properties in Makena are few and far between, making Makena properties some of the highest-priced real estate on Maui.
